Bats are unique and fascinating creatures. The only mammal capable of sustained flight, they understandably seem to us as strange and unpredictable critters. Though they feature prominently in some of our most violent and unsettling mythology, they are almost universally harmless fruit or insect eaters. That said, bats can cause considerable discomfort when found in your home, and they are known to carry rabies, which can be transferred to yourself and your pets.
Bats can be found in the home, most often during the spring and early summer when they are preparing to birth and raise their young. They cling to high spots, preferring attics, chimneys, and ceilings, as they need a vertical drop to begin flight. In being nocturnal, bats will rest silently in a closet and emerge while you sleep. Unless the thought of being bitten by a bat while asleep appeals to you, bat infestations should be addressed at once.
